Scar Camouflage

WHAT IT IS
Blending, not covering
A healed scar is usually paler than the skin around it, sometimes shiny, sometimes with a visible edge. Camouflage tattooing mixes pigment to your exact skin tone and works it into the scar tissue so the colour difference fades. The scar is still there under your fingers; it is simply much harder to see.
It works best on scars and stretch marks that are fully healed, at least a year old, flat, and lighter than the surrounding skin. Raised, dark, or fresh scars need a different plan, and we will say so at the consultation.
WHERE IT HELPS
The scars we see most
Surgical scars. C-section, tummy tuck, breast lift and reduction, facelift, thyroid, joint replacement.
Cleft lip revisions. Blending the scar line and, where wanted, restoring the lip border and colour for a more even shape.
Stretch marks. Abdomen, hips, thighs, arms, breasts. Pale, mature marks respond best.
Injury and burn scars once fully healed and stable.
Vitiligo and lost pigment in small, stable patches.
Fingernail and toenail illusion after a nail is lost to injury or surgery: a nail drawn in pigment on the nail bed.
THE PROCESS
Matched, tested, then built up
STEP 1
Consultation and colour match
We assess the scar, mix pigment to the skin beside it, and in most cases place a small test patch so you can see how the colour heals on you before we commit to the whole area.
STEP 2
Sessions
Camouflage is built in layers. Small areas may finish in one session; larger areas and stretch marks usually take two or three, spaced six to eight weeks apart.
STEP 3
Healing
The area looks darker and redder for the first two weeks, then settles. Final colour shows at about six weeks. Sun protection matters here more than anywhere.
COST
Set at the consultation
Camouflage is priced by the size of the area and the number of sessions it needs, so a quote only means something after we have seen the scar. The consultation and colour test are where that happens. Scar camouflage is rarely covered by insurance; areola work after mastectomy is the exception, and that is its own page.
